“Our holidays are about finding the hidden Spain. Our visitors are based in Torrox, an historic Moorish village just four kilometres from the coast. The townspeople boast that they enjoy “La mejor clima de Europa” – the best climate in Europe, and they could be right.”
Walk Andalucia’s guests stay in traditional village houses, which have been both sympathetically restored and furnished with all modern conveniences:
“We want our walkers to be comfortable and well-fed – guests enjoy every aspect of Spain, including its food. Meals are taken in a variety of village restaurants and we enjoy a special evening with Maria, who is the Presidente de las Mujeres de La Medina, who cooks a nine-course Spanish banquet at her cortija in the hills overlooking the village and the sea.
“The villagers are delighted that Walk Andalucia is introducing people to their area. Tourism plays an increasingly important part in this rural economy, and the great thing about walking holidays is that they have a very small impact on the environment. We provide local people with business, and take great care to leave the countryside as we find it.”
The holidays are guided by two experienced British walkers, Dave and Gill, who have spent many years exploring the area and learning about its plant and animal life as well as local customs and traditions. The couple now live in a small farm above the village and are fluent Spanish speakers. Dave is trained in hill safety and First Aid, while Gill, a qualified nutritionist, oversees the assembly of the delicious packed lunches provided daily. She is also responsible for the general well-being of guests.
“Walks are graded according to ability, and no-one gets left behind. We want people to have fun while they keep fit, and we’ll happily drive people up to enjoy panoramic views if they can’t make it all the way on foot. “ says Elaine.
Walks are conducted in both the spring, when the hills are covered with wild flowers, and in the autumn when the clarity of the light gives breathtaking views across the Mediterranean.
